🧠 Alzheimer's, sugar and a surprising solution
📈 The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is on the rise, going hand in hand with increasing sugar consumption.
Increased consumption of refined sugar and high glycemic index carbohydrates:

As sugar intake has increased in recent decades, the brain has become increasingly dependent on glucose, and the mechanisms for processing and recycling (including glycogen breakdown) have become disrupted.
🔍 What the science says
A recent study (Nature Metabolism) shows that:
- In Alzheimer's, neurons can no longer break down glycogen.
- Glycogen binds to the tau protein involved in the disease → blocking the breakdown.
- This decreases the production of antioxidants such as NADPH and glutathione → increases neuronal degradation.
👩🔬 Normally, glycogen is "broken down" by an enzyme (glycogen phosphorylase) into antioxidant molecules that protect the brain.
📉 In Alzheimer's, tau protein blocks the enzyme → oxidative stress → neuronal death.
⏳ Solution suggested by the study
- Intermittent fasting and reduced caloric intake increase glycogen phosphorylase activity (effect observed in flies).
- The effect was also replicated with a synthetic drug.
- A balanced, antioxidant-rich diet supports cognitive health.
🥥 Coconut oil - 'spare fuel' for the brain
In Alzheimer's:
- Neurons become resistant to insulin and stop using glucose efficiently.
- Glycogen is blocked → chronic energy deficit.
Coconut oil:
- It is rich in MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides).
- These quickly turn into ketone bodies - a source of energy that doesn't need insulin and goes straight to the brain.
Ketone bodies:
✔ Feed neurons even when glycogen is blocked.
✔ Reduce oxidative stress.
✔ Keep more NADPH available for glutathione regeneration.
✔ Produce fewer free radicals than burning glucose.

🧠 Can zeolite help the brain in Alzheimer's?
📌 Short answer: There is no firm clinical evidence that zeolite cures or stops Alzheimer's.

🔍 What we know from research
1️⃣ Heavy metal detoxification
Natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) binds lead, mercury, aluminum - metals which, in excess, are toxic to the brain. Aluminum, for example, is suspected of being involved in the formation of beta-amyloid deposits in Alzheimer's.
2️⃣ Reducing oxidative stress and inflammation
Animal studies show that zeolite decreases inflammatory markers and oxidative stress - processes that accelerate neuronal degeneration.
3️⃣ Protection of the gut-brain axis
Zeolite can improve the integrity of the intestinal barrier, reducing chronic inflammation affecting the brain (called inflammaging).
⚠️ Important to remember
- We do not have large clinical trials on Alzheimer's patients.
- Any benefit would probably be indirect (detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant).
- It is not a substitute for a balanced diet, intermittent fasting, physical activity and blood glucose control.
So although zeolite is not a cure for Alzheimer's, it can be a useful adjunct in a comprehensive plan to support brain health.
🌿 Integrated with: anti-inflammatory diet, sugar reduction, intermittent fasting and alternative brain energy sources (e.g. coconut oil/MCT).

📌 My conclusion
There are no firm studies (yet) showing that intermittent fasting, low-carb diets or coconut oil reduce the risk of Alzheimer's, dar, the mechanisms discovered make this hypothesis plausible.
